Weekly News
Week ending Friday 6th December 2024
This week year 5 has come to the end of some of their topics. We have been completing synoptic tasks to summarise what we have learnt in our humanities topics and have been creating posters encouraging people to celebrate the real meaning of Christmas and to keep 'Christ' in Christmas in our RE lesson this week. We have completed informative biographies about the famous Ernest Shackleton. This Friday afternoon, we had loads of fun with our buddies enjoying Christmas activities.
Week ending Friday 29th November 2024
Year 5 have had another amazing week showing our value of the month: Wisdom. They have been showing off all their gained knowledge as we are starting to come to an end of our humanities topics: Oceans and the Anglo-Saxons. It has been amazing watching them all progress and seeing how much they are inspired by these topics at home!! We have also continued to practice 'T'was on a starry night.' This week, Year 5 have also been completing their first set of assessments of the year; they have all put in great amounts of effort during this week's assessments, and they should all be very proud. We cannot wait to start the countdown to Christmas next week!
Week ending Friday 22nd November 2024
This week, year 5 have been very busy completing assessments in Maths, Reading and GPS: it has been amazing to see how much the children know and have learnt over such a short amount of time. We have also been writing up our Endurance Narratives, inspired by the Endurance expedition led by Ernest Shackleton. Year 5 have started learning their Christmas carol of 'T'was on a starry night.' Squirrels and Badgers enjoyed a lovely, calm afternoon with their year 5 buddies this Friday after a week of hard work! We look forward to continuing our learning of fractions, Anglo-Saxons and much more next week!
Week ending Friday 15th November 2024
This week has been very busy for year 5! We had an amazing time at the Museum of Kent Life on Monday, learning all about the Anglo-Saxons through a range of engaging workshops - the tractor ride was the best part! We have also been learning a lot about fractions in maths: converting, comparing and ordering fractions. We also had an amazing week of English as we were able to go outside onto the playground and mark out all 44 metres of the Endurance ship, some sea animals and the James Caird boat. Year 5 had time to look at the wonderful art competition entries together. We are looking forward to writing our narratives all about Shackleton's adventure next week as well as continuing our learning in the foundation subjects.
Week ending Friday 8th November 2024
After a restful half-term, year 5 have settled back into school with a very positive attitude and have been learning all about their new topics! We have started looking at fractions in maths and have started our new book called 'Shackleton's Journey' by William Grill in English; writing setting descriptions and atmospheric poems about the hostile environment and icy temperatures. We have started our new topic, Oceans in Geography, and have started looking at the Anglo-Saxons in History. Year 5 have made a tremendous effort sewing their poppies in preparation for Remembrance Day. We are also looking forward to our trip to the Museum of Kent Life next Monday!
Week ending Friday 25th October 2024
This week, year 5 have had a very busy last week of term! We enjoyed seeing our buddies again this week and having an amazing time at forest school as a class where the year 5 children guided their EYFS buddy through their Forest School experience and then had a session on their own. We have continued to practice our handwriting by finishing our WOW writing (our diary entries from the perspective of fruits and vegetables!) In maths, we have been multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 and have looked at prime, square and cubed numbers! Year 5 have recapped and concluded their learning about Baghdad and water in California. We have created some really beautiful stained-glass window designs and are looking forward to the half-term ahead.
Next term, we will be looking at 'Animals including Humans' in Science and ask that children find 3 photos of themselves - one as a baby, one as a toddler and one as a child. We will be sticking these in our science books on Wednesday.
Week ending Friday 18th October 2024
This week has been very exciting and jam packed for year 5. 5N have been on their science afternoon at Tonbridge school (photos to follow) and did lots of chemistry experiments which they had lots of fun learning about! 5H have been to forest school this week (with a twist). 5H had to show lots of responsibility as it was their buddies first time at forest school! They played lots of games together and showed their buddies in Squirrels how much fun they have at outdoor learning. We have been continuing with our wonderful pencil landscape sketches and have written our very own diary entry about how food travels from the farms to our plates ... from the perspective of the fruits and vegetables themselves! In Maths, we have started our multiplication topic and have been learning lots about multiples and factors.
Week ending Friday 11th October 2024
Year 5 have spent the week working hard on their formal writing producing a 'Mission Log' for their trip to the moon. They have rounded off the literacy for the week editing and neat writing their work. In maths, we have covered addition and subtraction strategies including calculations using logical reasoning.
5H thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Tonbridge School for science experiments (pictures to follow), and 5N are looking forward to their trip next week.
Next week we will be covering multiples and factors in maths and our literacy work will be linked to the theme of Harvest.
Week ending Friday 4th October 2024
This week year 5 have started their new and exciting maths topic of addition and subtraction, learning how to exchange using their place value knowledge! We are nearly coming to the end of our book in English, titled, 'When We Walked On the Moon'. This week, we have been planning our formal mission logs after receiving an exciting letter from NASA asking us to be part of their team because our Exploration Narratives were wonderful. We will be writing our mission logs from our adventures in space next week. In Science, we have been exploring how we get day and night and investigating what happens to the Sun when it is night time. Year 5 have been building dens and clay and eating lots of yummy popcorn in Forest School this week!
Week ending Friday 27th September 2024
Year 5 have had a fantastic week of writing! We have been putting all of our planning and ideas together to finally create our Exploration Narratives about landing on the moon. We have all put our amazing ideas onto paper and some of us have even made it to the Golden Book this week! We have come to the end of our place value topic in Maths. 5H have enjoyed learning about how night and day occur in Science whilst 5N have had a blast at forest school this week.
Last week, we met our new buddies in the Squirrels and Badgers class and had loads of fun learning about each other! We will continue to meet them weekly until our harvest service at the Church.
Week ending Friday 20th September 2024
This week Year 5 have continued to make an amazing start to the year. We now both started forest school now and have thoroughly enjoyed making chairs and dens out of tyres!
We have continued to look at place value in maths and numbers up to 1,000,000. We have had lots of fun on an immersive imaginary Spacewalk to help us gather lots of brilliant ideas for our writing in English next week.
Week ending Friday 13th September 2024
This week, we have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the children in an outdoor activity setting where we have seen them excel in team building, orienteering and pushing themselves to complete complex low rope challenges. They had an amazing time making new friends and of course, getting muddy at Carroty Wood!! (Photos to follow)
We have started our class book of When We Walked on the Moon during our English lessons and were astounded to watch the first commercial Space Walk Live on the BBC this week. We have also been looking at numbers up to 1,000,000 and have learnt about new columns in the place value chart.
5N have started Forest School this week, engaging in tasks such as, Woodland Management using the new theatre area and 5H are looking forward to start learning outdoors from next week.
