Termly News
Term 1:
The children have made a phenomenal start to their Year 6 journey, settling straight back into school life. They have taken their new leadership roles in their stride, being exemplary role models to the rest of the school.
Within Maths this term, they have continued to develop their knowledge and understanding of place value, before moving on to secure their understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Through determination and perseverance, they have tackled some challenging questions, proving their understanding of new methods and concepts. Next term, we will be tackling fractions, a concept that currently scares a lot of them, but we are certain that by Christmas, they will be confident in solving problems involving fractions.
Our English text this term has been King Kong, which the children have thoroughly enjoyed reading and creating their own stories based on the dilemma that they read about in this novel. They have shown excellent use of powerful vocabulary, creating effective narratives, leaving the reader on the edge of their seat.
Throughout the term, Year 6 have been working on their reading skills, including fluency, vocabulary and text retrieval. They have demonstrated strong understanding of the texts they are reading and are able to discuss them clearly. Within the Harvest Festival Service at St Stephen's, the children performed their reflective Harvest poems with clarity and confidence as a result of the hard work they have put into our Reader's Theatre sessions.
Within our foundation subjects this term, the children have been very busy experimenting in Science about living things and their habitats, which involved an experiment about mould growing on bread; they have been research detectives in History learning about the Ancient Maya Civilisation, considering which foods were important to them and why; they have written letters to Tom Tugenhart about climate change in Geography; and explored rhythms in Music, playing along to popular songs such as "Smooth Criminal".
Next term, they have many more exciting lessons planned, including their Maya workshop to finalise their learning from this term, alongside a new English text: A Story Like the Wind. In History and Geography, we will be learning about Ethiopia and the Kingdom of Benin.
