Week ending 16th January 2026
Year 5 have had another incredible week of learning! They have all terrified Miss Hume and Mr Neville with their tense and thrilling survival narrative in English this week, making it the best piece of writing they have done so far this year! Everyone has shown the month's key value of creativity by using different features to intensify their writing. Year 5 have also been smashing both multiplication and division and have learnt how to use formal methods to show our working and solve problem-solving and reasoning questions. We have explored what freedom and justice means in RE and have learnt more about another saga in History this week. We have started our new topic of portraits in art this week, showing creativity through our poem portraits. 5H have had their first session at Forest School this week and 5N will have their second sessions with Mrs Kyte next week.
Week ending 9th January 2026
The children in Year 5 are back for more learning this week, feeling refreshed after our Christmas break. We have started new topics this Week, including multiplication and division in Maths, and started a new book called 'The Lost Book of Adventure' in English, writing setting poems and character descriptions to generate some creative ideas. In Geography, we have started our new topic of the Amazon Rainforest, linking this with English as well as our Science topic, 'Living things and their habitats.' In History, we have started a new topic of Norse Culture and learnt more about the Saga of Freydis and her courage! The children in Year 5 have been super excited about our Rainforest Workshop, where we learnt more about the Rainforest and met some of the tropical animals, including toads, lizards and snakes (we even got to touch them!). We are looking forward to continuing getting back into our school routines!
Week ending 18th December 2025
In the final week of term, the children in Year 5 have been getting into the festive spirit, writing their own Christmas Catastrophe stories, solving lots of mysteries using their maths and SPaG skills and creating their own Christmas themed collage using different materials and tissue paper. Year 5 had a magical time playing lots of Christmas games with their buddies, which they thoroughly enjoyed. The children also showed responsibility, even in the last week, by helping their buddies in Reception make Christingles, reminding them about the real reason for Christmas. We sat through the lovely Christmas Service together and ended the term by singing different carols. We are all looking forward to the Christmas break and wish everyone a restful Christmas. You will find homework on the homework tab but please note this is optional – we would like to ensure that the children are still reading over the Christmas holidays.
Week ending 12th December 2025
The Children in Year 5 have been embracing the countdown to Christmas. We have had a very busy week full of festivities, including our delicious Christmas lunch, seeing Santa in his grotto, enjoying charros by the fire in Forest School as well as watching the KS1 Nativity! We have been planning our own Christmas Catastrophe stories in English and have been using our maths skills to create our own Christmas tree in DT. We have been very busy making Christmas cards and using different art media to create a wintery landscape in art. We are looking forward to the final week of term!
Week ending 5th December 2025
This week has been a very busy one for year 5 as it marks the start of the countdown to Christmas! The children did an amazing job at working hard to complete their Formal Mission Logs inspired by our topic 'Earth and Space' and the book, 'When We Walked on the Moon.' The children did their own independent research on the Apollo Missions, which they then included in their Mission Log. We are coming to the end of different topics we have enjoyed this term, such as "Lady of the Mercians" in History as well as "Oceans" in Geography. We have started to look at multiplication and division in Maths, which we will be delving into after half-term. The children had an incredible afternoon with their buddies on Friday and embraced the Christmas spirit at the Christmas Fair in the afternoon. We look forward to another week of learning and fun-filled activities as we get closer to Christmas!
Week ending 7th November 2025
The children have had an incredible week of learning with a trip to Wakehurst on Thursday and the Wonderdome visit today! The children have been investigating the Solar System in Science, which they loved learning more about in the Wonderdome as well as planning their exploration narrative in English all about landing on the Moon! In Maths this week, we have been digging deeper into our fractions topic and have had an amazing day out at Wakehurst place, learning all about the Rainforest, plants and why it is so important in our lives! The staff at Wakehurst were very impressed with the children and their knowledge! We had lots of fun learning about Bishop Chavasse Day and creating mottos with their House Groups in year 2.
Week ending 31st October 2025
Year 5 have had an incredible week of learning after a well-deserved half-term. The children have been working very hard across the subjects and have started some exciting new topics, such as Earth and Space, where they made a mini-solar system including the Sun, Earth and the moon. They have begun learning about Oceans in Geography and started exploring the Vikings! They have immersed themselves in our new story in English, 'When we walked on the moon,' and have managed to amaze their teachers with their strong vocabulary and ideas in their writing this week. We look forward to an exciting week next week, with our trip to Wakehurst and the Wonderdome!
Week ending 17 th October 2025
This week, the children in year 5 have had an amazing week of concluding their learning across different topics we have explored this term. They have created some amazing leaflets about Antarctic animals, using the internet to research facts and Microsoft publisher to publish their writing! We have had a creative last week of term, creating colourful prints of the 'memory drawings' we have been working on in Art and recapping all of our knowledge in Geography by creating posters about California. We are all looking forward to a well-deserved break and more new and exciting learning after half term! Please note: The children do not have to complete every question given for maths homework, it is purely an opportunity to practice their addition and subtraction skills over the half term.
Week ending 10th October 2025
We started the week with a wonderful church service all about Harvest, where the children in year 5 performed their 'Harvest Rock and Roll' song beautifully. The children have been learning more about the Anglo-Saxons in history this week and have been developing their memory sketches in art, which we will produce prints of next week. We have come to the end of some of our topics, such as addition and subtraction in maths and our book, 'Shackleton's Journey' in English. To conclude, the children have been writing some amazing informal letters from the perspectives of characters on the Endurance. We have also had the wonderful treat of watching the Talent show this Friday!

Week ending 3rd October 2025
Year 5 have had another incredible week of learning, writing informative biographies about the life of the intrepid explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton and developing their knowledge in maths surrounding addition and subtraction. This week, the children continued their learning in different subjects, exploring almond growing in Geography and more about the Anglo-Saxons in History. 5H had an amazing week with their buddies at Forest School and 5N enjoyed learning about programming in computing! Some of year 5 have been courageous enough to audition for the upcoming school talent show, and we are really looking forward to this event next Friday! Next week, we will have our Harvest Service at church, so there will be no rugby on Monday. A letter has been sent out about our upcoming lesson about puberty as part of our science topic next Wednesday.

Week ending 19th September 2025
This week, the children have been continuing their learning across all subjects. They have shown great passing in Rugby and have been developing tone and depth in their artwork. Year 5 have also started writing their narratives about Shackleton's challenges in Antarctica, using amazing vocabulary and semi colons in our stories. The children visited their buddies again this week and have been setting a great example for the Squirrels and Badgers. 5H flourished in their first Forest School session of the year, where they created a cafe, went to war (not a real one, of course) and also learnt how to use a palm drill and key drill to make log medallions for the winners! We also begun our Science topic, 'Animals, including Humans' and learnt about how humans change over time.

Week ending 12th September 2025
The children have had another amazing week of learning in Year 5. We have started lots of new and exciting topics and have been learning more about place value in Maths, Anglo-Saxons in History. On Monday, the children enjoyed their first session of Rugby with the Tonbridge Juddians in PE. 5N had an amazing first Forest School session and 5H are looking forward to theirs next Thursday! We have listened to the journey of Ernest Shackleton in English this week, writing poems and setting descriptions based on the story as well as drawing out the outline of the famous ship and Antarctic animals on the playground before getting caught in the rain! The children were thrilled in Year 5 and EYFS as they met their new buddies, read stories and got to know each other.
Week ending 5th September 2025
The children in Year 5 have settled in beautifully this week, making new friends and enjoying time with their new teachers. We have learnt so much about each other and have learnt how to be amazing role models for the rest of the school, getting back into our routines and creating class charters so that our classrooms are a fun and safe space to learn. On Friday, the children in both Year 3 and 5 had a magnificent day at Carroty Wood full of adventurous team-building activities such as field games, low ropes, orienteering and toasted marshmallows with camp fire songs with Mrs Kyte. All the children had an 'epic' day with their new classes, making lots of memories and friends. We are looking forwards to next week's rugby session on Monday and another great week of learning and starting new topics.
