Handwriting in Year 2

On this page you will find resources to support your child to practise their handwriting.

We hope you find it useful. Please do email your class teacher if you require further guidance or support.

The website below has some great resources to support you with helping your child.

Year 2 handwriting expectations:

  • Form lower- case letters of the correct size relative to one another.
  • Start using some of the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join letters and understand which letters, when adjacent to one another, are best left unjoined.
  • Write capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower case letters.
  • Use spacing between words that reflects the size of the letters.

Pen position and posture:

Please ensure both feet are flat on the floor and your child's chair is tucked in. The children should hold the pencil with a tripod grip with one hand and the other hand should be placed on the paper.

Letter groups:

There are four different letter groups.

  • 'Around' letters: c,a,o,d,g,q
  • 'Down' letters: l, t, b, p, k, h, i, j, m, n, r, u, y
