At Bishop Chavasse, the children have started to learn Latin in KS2! From Year 3, the children have begun to learn how to speak and write in Latin. We are using the Minimus scheme of learning to help support the teaching of Latin in Key Stage 2!
The teaching and learning of Latin focuses on the key skills of being able to translate and write simple sentences, communicate as well as understand the history of the language. The children have been able to identify how Latin can be linked to our own language in many ways!
The children benefit from a cross- curricular approach when learning Latin as many parts of their lessons are taught through exciting and interactive ways. Their activities are linked to other curriculum subjects such as DT and Art, Geography, History and Music.
Following the Minimus course, the children begin to learn about the history behind a real family that lived in Vindolanda back in 100AD! The story of this family, that include Flavius, the fort commander, his wife Lepidina, their three children, assorted household slaves, their cat Vibrissa - and Minimus the mouse, continues term by term allowing the children to become a part of their lives and understand what it may have been like back in 100AD.
