Food technology lessons focus on both the theory and the practical application of cooking and nutrition.  All lessons are differentiated. This means teachers plan activities that enable the objectives to be learned by all children including those who will find the objective challenging, those children who with hard work will secure good progress and those children who can tackle extra stretch and challenge in this subject.

Year R

Our EYFS children begin to develop a food vocabulary using taste, smell, texture and feel. They start to think about the need for a variety of foods in a diet. Food technology lessons are linked to the children's curricular areas and topic themes, which means that the children can be seen making Gruffalo crumble and turnip soup.

Year 1

Year 1 children use their learning in this subject area to begin to understand that all food comes from plants or animals. They will also begin to develop children’s peeling and chopping skills.

Year 2

Our children will know that food has to be farmed, grown elsewhere (e.g. home) or caught.

They will understand how to name and sort foods into the five groups in ‘The Eat well plate’ and also begin to use techniques such as cutting, peeling and grating.

Year 3

Begin to know that food is grown (such as tomatoes, wheat and potatoes), reared (such as pigs, chickens and cattle) and caught (such as fish) in the UK, Europe and the wider world.

Be able to use a range of techniques such as peeling, chopping, slicing and grating.

Year 4

Understand that food is grown, reared and caught in the UK, Europe and the wider world. Understand how to prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes safely and hygienically. Further develop skills including mixing, kneading and baking.

Year 5

Understand that seasons may affect the food available. Understand how food is processed into ingredients that can be eaten or used in cooking. Gain confidence in the skills of peeling, chopping, slicing, grating, mixing, kneading and baking.

Year 6

Using their knowledge and skills know how to prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes safely and hygienically.

Become increasingly skilled at peeling, chopping, slicing, grating, mixing, kneading and baking.

Enriching our Food Technology Curriculum

Through Food Technology Enrichment Lessons, children are able to make quality products, which they are able to take home to enjoy.  The children will be taught to evidence a range of independent cooking skills and will learn about the importance of nutrition and the 'Eat Well Plate'.
